Production Process
Materials of Preform Mold
Steel alloys are by far the most popular choice for making PET preform molds. They offer a great combination of strength, hardness, and wear resistance, which are essential properties for molds that are subjected to high pressures and temperatures during the injection molding process.
One of the most commonly used steel alloys for PET preform molds is P20. This alloy is known for its excellent machinability, which means it can be easily shaped into complex mold designs. P20 also has good polishability, which is important for achieving a smooth surface finish on the preforms. Additionally, it has moderate hardness and toughness, making it suitable for medium to high-volume production.
Another popular steel alloy is H13. This alloy is a hot-work tool steel that is specifically designed to withstand high temperatures and thermal cycling. H13 has excellent heat resistance, which allows it to maintain its hardness and strength even at elevated temperatures. It also has good corrosion resistance, which is important for molds that are used in environments where they may be exposed to moisture or chemicals. H13 is commonly used for high-volume production of PET preforms, especially in applications where the molds are subjected to frequent heating and cooling cycles.
For applications that require even higher levels of hardness and wear resistance, tool steels such as D2 and A2 may be used. These steels have a high carbon content and are alloyed with elements such as chromium, molybdenum, and vanadium to enhance their hardness and wear resistance. However, they are also more difficult to machine and require special heat treatment processes to achieve their optimal properties.
